We have just observed Memorial Day. Many of us think of this day as the unofficial start of Summer. We get our grills out, set up the patio furniture, work on our yards, or head out to camp. we mark the occasion with traditions such as the Indy 500, or Coca-Cola 600 for you NASCAR fans, and cook out's.
But the tradition actually began as Decoration Day, to decorate and honor the sacrifice that US soldiers made by losing thier lives. We have broadened this to Memorial Day, and while we still decorate and stll have parades and observances, many of us use the time to get things done and relax. We take a smal sabbath from our work.
As was evident, many of us were not at worship on Sunday. Now that is okay because even pastors need that once in a while. But when we look at the commandment, which says "remember the sabbath day and keep it holy" we remeber that even our God rested, and so calls us to rest, calls us to sabbath. We need not wait for a national holiday but every week we have the chance to actually sabbath to rest from our world and commune with God.
So as sumemr comes let us not forget about our sabbath and that we need not wait for a time to get away, but always have that day and that time to commune with God and the body of Christ.
