As Lent begins I always fall into the same trap. I ask what should I give up. I know there is more to it than just giving up a vice, but I do it every year, and feel guilty for not thinking of something. The reason, is of course tradition for one, and sacrifice for another. But as I think about what the true meaning of observing a Lenten Discipline, one has to ask is it really about giving something up?
The Observance liturgy of the church calls us "to observe a holy Lent: by self examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self denial; and by reading and meditating on God's Holy word"(United Methodist Book of Worship p.322).
So it is there, and I still haven't decided. One thing I know is that in some ways I have already started a discipline by taking better care of myself physically, working out 3 days a week. This does involve commitment, self denial, (not so much fasting) and self examination to name a few. So perhaps I have given up something by adding something else.
What is God calling you to give up so you may add to your life as well in this Holy Season of Lent.
