This week we discussed Genesis 45:1-15, the story of Joseph being reunited with his brothers in Egypt, and how he responded to them being in his presence.
We discussed how Joseph was overwhelmed with joy and lost "control" of himself and his emotions. That while he was now clearly the one in control of the situation, he was willing to use his control for good, and even lose his control for the sake of his family who was till alive during the famine. We all like to be in control but often times when we try to control too much we wind up controlling hardly anything. So how can we let go of our control and allow God to be in control of our lives?
The second point was on preservation. Most of the time we try to control things by preserving what we have. But when we let go and look to the future we can preserve far more than we could by holding back. Joseph was sent into slavery by his brothers to get rid of him. But in the end God sent him ahead to preserve life. What are we preserving? How can we take steps to preserve what we have by following where God leads us?
The third point was "provide." By Joseph attaining the position he did he was able to provide for everyone, including his family. God provided the opportunity and Joseph responded. Sometimes when we provide we put conditions on them, expecting something in return. Christians are reminded that God has provided for us without asking, and knowing that we can in know way return God's grace in kind. When we provide, as Joseph did for his family, expecting nothing in return, we often will find that we get back more than we give in the first place.
