Lent

It is hard to believe that Lent is here. It seems like we just put away the Christmas decorations. (Actually we did just before Ash Wednesday). Lent is early this year because Easter is early, and so we must prepare. One can ask, what are we preparing for?

Well in the early days of the church people prepared themselves for baptism on Easter Sunday and the members prepared themselves to recieve them. Nowadays in the protestant tradition we don't do much in the way of preparing. That is why it is important for us to be reminded of Lent and the discipline that it requires. Not because what we do earns us a greater place, in heaven, but because we are called to discipline ourselves in this life all the time.
